Understanding margins and markup
The difference between cost, margin, and what to actually charge.
Cost is what the bake costs you to make. Markup is how much you add on top to cover your labour, overhead, and profit. Margin is the percentage of your final price that is profit.
The Quick Markup tab in the Pricing Tool lets you enter your cost and a target markup percentage, and it shows you the final price to charge — taking the guesswork out of "what should I charge."
💡
A common mistake is pricing only to cover ingredients. Your time is a cost too — factor in an hourly rate for your labour, not just the flour and sugar.
